This cast iron lathe was offered for sale on eBay in May 2003. It's labeled "F. E. Wells and Son, Greenfield, Mass USA" on the drive end casting and "314" on its 36" long bed. "U9608", presumably the serial number, is also stamped on the bed, and there is a small brass plaque attached to the front of the headstock, which reads "Greenfield Tap and Die Corporation, Greenfield Mass USA." The weight was estimated at 250 lbs.

The lathe uses a long shaft between its support legs, a four speed, manual shift and lock mechanism below the headstock, and a short flat belt between this mechanism and the spindle. The current outboard pulley is a wooden replacement with two V-belt grooves, designed to take power from an electric motor. The lathe's original power probably came off a flat belt from line shafting, using a smooth surfaced iron pulley.
