Comments:
My grandfather's drill press came missing the maker's label. Overall height is about 26 in., 5.25 in. from the column to the spindle. Speed is adjustable in five steps raising or lowering the upper of the two nested cones using the crank on the side of the belt guard, and the belt can be adjusted to right angles moving the idlers though I don't know if my setup with a hinged motor mount was used originally. A simple threaded rod up and down stop is arranged between the feed rod and the spindle, with the thrust bearing carried in the casting connecting them. Ball bearings used thoughout, and the chuck is Jacobs no.1. The hidden height adjustable table has a coolant trough cast on all four sides.

Edited 2006-12-07 to add manufacturer info. The 1932 Peterson patent for the design of the variable-speed mechanism is here: http://www.datamp.org/displayPatent.php?number=1842194&type=UT
