Found in Chetopa, Ks. It was one of a collection of antique w.w. and metal working machines that was connected to a privately owned and operated grist mill on the Neosho River, S.E. Ks. The oral history he provided with the planer was that it was original to the Chetopa planing mill just south of his grist mill. The attached American name puts the manufacturing date during or after the late 1890's even though it has 1871 & 1879 pat'd dates. The mach. carries five cutter heads- 24" top head, 20" bottom head, two side matcher heads, the fifth an overhead 5" moulder head with a 15" lateral adj. This cutter head was 'stored' in a box car on rural farm site in 1948 when planer was last moved. Not much of the box car was left when he took me out to retrieve it, but we crawled through the remains and found it in the corner he had left it in. The 24" top planing head was the only cutter ever used. Note: The four other cutter heads were unscathed and the babbit was virgin. I used it as planer for 10 yrs. It's now in my storage.
