This is the one that got me hooked,25 years ago. Found it in a side yard here in Humboldt and gave a 100$ for it. It was a sorry beast. Two broken legs held together with forged splints along with all the common ailments found on used & abused planers. May have gone through a fire. The most frightful was the expanded iron mesh spot welded around the feed rollers as if it was intended to feed trees or telephone posts through it. Of course, the chip deflector was missing. On this mach. that meant the makers name was gone. Worked it over, ran it once with neighbors tractor then sold it for 100$. Twenty three years later it was deposited behind my shop! A mistress returned. The only clue I had to it's maker was etching in the 1881 Kirkwood machine catalog, and it wasn't clear enough to be sure. But.... the saints of research at owwm. provided the proof. It's shown in the paper archives, Lane Manufacturing Co. Planers, Matchers and Jointers. The most noteable part of planer is the three knife, triangular cutter head.
