My father called me one day and said he had seen a big table saw in a building that was due to be demolished. He had talked to the new owner of the building, and had been told to take the saw if he wanted it. He told me he did not know what kind of saw it was, or it's age, or if it was even all there, but if I wanted to take a chance on it I could have it. I said sure I'd take a chance. We went the next day to load it. It was only then did we find out it was a Delta cabinet saw. We still didn't know if it worked, but it did seem to have all the parts, so back home we went.

Once we got home, we plugged it in and it ran. It was missing a blade, and blade insert, but came with two fences. Encouraged about my good fortune, I began to try to find out what model it was and it's approximate age. We guessed it to be about a 50's to 60's model. I called Delta with the serial number, but was told it was not in there records. The very nice lady at Delta said it sounded like a Unisaw, and it was probobly an "older" machine. She couldn't/wouldn't be more specific.

I stumbled upon an article by Keith Bohn, about trying to age his Unisaw. I read the article, and looked at the photo. He said in the article that in his 25 years of woodworking, he had only seen one other four footed Unisaw besides his own. I looked at the photo again and looked at my saw, mine had four feet as well. Keith made clear in his article that 1939 was the first year the Unisaw was introduced, and the only year they were made with four feet.

Wow, I had finally found what I wanted to know about my "new" saw. Many thanks to Keith Bohn, and many members on the OWWM Yahoo board for the information on the saw.

Edited 2/18/04 to correct model number

4/18/2004- I finally have an "after" shot to show. You can see from the photo that the switch is not installed. I do not have the original, and will be useing new safety switch. I will also be replaceing the fence system before long, the Jet-lock leaves a lot to be desired.
