Iola Planing Mill tenoner and cope machine. Essential to sash and door fabrication. It seems that most planing mills and even many lumberyard millwork shops in smaller towns specialized in sash work. Even though railrods arrived in this area [ S.E. Kansas ] in late 1860'- early 1870's, the large city and industrial mills couldn't competitively ship window sash by rail. The Iola Planing Mill survived the post World War II years, and the sash machines in particular, because Otis Ayling, mill owner, tapped into the new demand for wood frame 'storm' windows making up to 1500 per winter. Simpler than complete sash construction, but using the same machines. Learned a lot about flat belt dynamics on this machine.Even by the time these photos were taken we were unaware that the pulley driving the cope cutter countershaft was upside down and the stick wasn't necessary to keep the belt tracking.
