I looked for a low speed grinder for sharpening carbon steel edge tools for over a year. I just was not comfortable with the imports that run really slow & in water, mostly because they are slow to cut & require the tool being sharpened to be on a holder of some sort (idiot proofed ?) when I like to hold the tool by hand against a rest with the wheel rotating toward the cutting edge. After spending hours cruising the usual industrial supply catalogs and web auctions looking for a low speed (1750 RPM) bench grinder for an affordable price (under $500 ? no way) I was about to start looking for parts to build a belt/low speed wheel combo.

Then perseverance paid off. While on a trip through the LA basin I walked into California Woodworking Machinery (http://www.calwoodmach.com/). Beyond the medium to huge equipment they sell new they have a lot of used equipment. For $250 I picked up the used, Cincinnati Electrical Tool Company bench grinder you see here. It is 1750 RPM, 220V only, 1ph, on a cast iron base with the articulating tool rest pieces being good quality cast iron. I did little more than remove paint and minor rust from the articulating parts and put a new cord on it. The thing showed little sign of use and has a magnetic motor control on a 1/3rd hp motor so I am guessing it was in a school. The bottom line is I am very happy with it. This is not a machine for shaping a piece of steel, but with a new coarse wheel on it I tried a couple of chisels & gouges that needed shaping of the bevel. Of course the wheel is de-glazed frequently & water is handy for cooling but I am very comfortable with putting a good piece of carbon steel against it and renewing the edge in a reasonable period of time without fear of seeing blue spots.
