The jointer came from the California Maritime Academy, and has every bit the Yates-American feel to it, Even though it is only a 1/2 HP 3 phase motor, The motor was made for Yates-American by Louis Allis, per the motor plate. it's really industrial for a 6" jointer. The cutter head is solid and smooth as silk.
It's a shame it doesn't have the original cool art decco base...but it's still a nice little jointer. Yates-American machinery is always welcome in my shop.
The California Maritime Academy, a piece of the U.S. Navy, added the base. Yates-American did sell jointers without the base, so it's possible that this was sold without one. The base has a dust box built into it.
Nice tilting cast iron fence, with ample height and quite long for a 6" jointer fence.
This is a 42" table. The J31 was manufactured in 36", 42", and 50" lengths.
A nice small jointer. Small jointers are hard to find in the wild on the older industrial type machines like this one.

photo of the front of the machine. You can see the guard and fence. Full of rust but this will definitely clean up nicely.
