I found this planer with the help of fellow OWWMer Bill Miner at the State of Illionis surplus sale.It weights about 6500 lbs.,4 knife cutterhead,220/440 volts,3 phase,15 h.p.,
belt drive to the cutterhead. The motor is mounted above and towards the back of the machine. The direct drive motor housing has the shaft from the cutterhead and a pulley in it only (the bearings are there to).the second motor is mounted to a cast iron motor mount that was made to fit on the planer perfectly.I don't know if this was done from the factory or the state did it.Who ever did it they really did a good of it.It looks like they did it to speed up the cutter head. The pulley on the cutterhead turns 2 times
around for every one turn of the pulley on the motor. The planer is in real good shape and there is no broken or missing parts. It still has only the factory paint job.I will be restoring and keeping this planer for my shop.I shall be putting my 24" Yates American
up for sale to make room for this one.I would like to hear what you might think about the motor set up and why you think they did it and was it done at the factory or by other hands?
