Crescent Spindle Shaper, 2 HP. Serial #79038, 1 spindle, circa 1940?.

Aloha,
Heres one for you Keith! Ive had this Crescent shaper in my shop for about 8 years and it was already on the island of Maui. It came from a plastic laminate counter top shop that also had a vintage 30" or so bandsaw that was painted the same color as this machine, but the band saw was not for sale as they still used that sometimes. The shaper had a home made fence and a big set of slip knives all ground by the previous owner of the top shop, I was told. The story goes that the old timer made a ton of Koa molding for his home in Maui which was very beautiful back in the day. I have all the knives so I could see that story was probably true but I have never used them myself. I have used it almost exclusively with a panel raiser and back cutter combo. This shaper works a little differently than any of my others in that the belt slips under a heavy load. I actually liked using it this way for shaping Koa panels I can slow it down and usually only take half a cut without moving the fence by exploiting this characteristic. I like to shape my panels without a feeder so it worked out perfectly for the way that I like to work, albeit a little unusual for most woodworkers. Anyway the spindle measures about .004 out but it still has always cut great. I did not do anything to this machine except add a similar vintage Rockwell fence and a mobile base. Its a heavy machine and is badged both Crescent and Rockwell so it was made in the transition years there somewhere, I am not exactly sure of the vintage. As the old saying goes; you can't be too rich or have too many shapers.
Aloha,
Chuck
