Machine was a purchased from auction from the navy. I've been told that the BOURN tag is from the Hayward/Oakland naval yard by a fellow owwm member. The person I purchased it from bought it 2 years prior to selling it. The seller refinished the base, but the table was completely coated with rust. I have cleaned the top, and it's a wonderful scraped vintage table. It is 40"x44", solid webbed cast iron.
1700 lbs. of cast iron, they sure don't make 'em like they used to! Considering that this saw was built right before WWII ended, and in what short supply steel was, the U.S. Navy really wanted these machines! It is my understanding that only companies producing product for the government were able to get any quantities of any type of iron or steel during those years.
I put the guard in an electrolisys tank, and it was amazing how much damage was on it from hitting the saw blade. I must take a pic and upload it here. The guard will not be used on the saw, but restored to original condition and stored off the machine. I do not have a pic right now.
All of the gears and internal workings were taken apart and cleaned by the previous owner, and everything is very smooth.
The handwheels were put into an electrolysis tank and cleaned up. The saw will remain black, and the handwheels will be left with the clean polished outer rim. They were still painted an obnoxious creame color, which can be seen in the first pic.
