This motor was connected to an early 50's Shopsmith 10ER that belonged to my grandfather-in-law, and seems original to the machine. Quick research into this model number results in similarly aged Shopsmiths having this same motor, and I've since found out that Magna had these ordered for their machines en masse.
The original color was a pale grey/blue similar to Shopsmith coloring (see photo). I have since seen other Shopsmith photos with the same colored motor. However, this seems as though the motor was repainted which was a common practice for Magna Engineering at the time - in order to make all of the motors they supplied look similar and match the Shopsmith machines better as it otherwise would have stood out drastically contrasted against the Shopsmith grey.
There are distinctly different colors underneath the grey/blue and some odd details like the oil filler cap being painted over or a different paint color under the capacitor cover.
As a result, I restored it to as close to the original intended paint color as I could. Not, the Magna repainted color.
Serial number was located under the start capacitor, painted on the housing. Model number was on the badge as well as stamped on the housing. The 56 in the serial number appears to reference the frame size, not the year.
Restoration included new winding varnish, new bearings, cleaned centrifugal switch, new electrical wiring (not seen in photos), and of course new paint.
Model number appears to be fairly standard
