Comments:
I purchased this on ebay many years ago for use as an outboard faceplate for my Craftsman lathe. The seller’s description said it was threaded 3/4” 16 TPI left hand thread, which was what I needed. Not having any experience with ShopSmith, I saw nothing strange in this, and indeed the item was exactly as described, a good fit on my left hand thread outboard spindle.

It was only today, browsing through the shopsmith pubs posted on vintagemachinery to date this item, that I realized that the faceplate socket should be smooth inside, to be held in place on the shopsmith spindle with a setscrew. There is indeed a small threaded hole in the side of the socket for a setscrew, but it did not come to me with a setscrew installed.

So, I guess some previous owner threaded this to repurpose it as an outboard faceplate for a non-shopsmith lathe. They did a good job, it threads on easily but with no slop, and is well balanced when spinning.

I’m guessing the dating based on the part number; the earliest catalogs posted here have the 120-1X part number, but by the mid-1950s the catalog number has changed to 12 290.

When not doing outboard turning, I have an oak handwheel turned to fit, so I always keep it mounted.
