Comments:
A fairly uncommon Portland machine that we have seen in two versions, the earlier version with serial numbers in the 10xx range with uninterrupted front sheet metal, and the 11xx serial numbered machines with two vertical seams on the front of the machine. This shaper shares several important characteristics with the Boice Crane shaper model 2100 introduced in 1938.
So far I think all of these shapers we have encountered have had 1/2” x 3/4” spindles whereas this one has the next size pair up: 3/4” and 1”.
Mine has a 3” tall drive pulley on the motor shaft, also not seen before. No fence was included with this machine.
A 1947 article in “Wood: The Magazine of the Forest Products Industry” indicates that this shaper had just been introduced. We should know a lot more when we get to read the full article.
