1960-ish Powermatic 160 model 16'' planer. Acquired from a friend's high school Technology Education program this piece was well cared for and definitely not over used. Powermatic did some rather neat features in those days, some of which are a quick adjustment of the bed rolls to easily switch back and forth between rough and smooth lumber, a knife sharpening system and what I call a Leonardo da Vinci type configuration of gears and pulleys which provides adjustable feed speeds without a separate feed motor. With solid cast iron everywhere except for guards it's a hefty 1300 pounds, very solid for it's size. A five horsepower three phase motor with a three knife cutterhead is plenty for whatever it is asked to do. Feed speed is from 15 to 37 feet per minute and will handle stock up to 6'' thick. These are well designed complicated machines with hundreds of parts and it's no wonder they were so popular and still highly sought after today. We did a near total breakdown except for the cutterhead and feed rolls, then a good cleaning, new paint and a few new hardware parts. This was actually one of the easiest restorations I've ever done thanks to it being so well maintained. Even though we already have a 30'' planer in service I'm going to keep this one for use in our cabinet and shutter building and can't wait to get the power to it!
