This spindle moulder was purchased from a custom window manufacturing shop in the wilds of Quebec, Canada (well maybe not that wild, actually rue des Frères-Moncion dans le secteur Masson). The senior shop hand that helped load my trailer said that it was purchased brand-new about 65 years ago but the window manufacturing shop has converted entirely to PVC window frames, so this machines have been sitting in the corner unused for about the last 15 years.
The fence is labeled "WACO" which I am guessing is Maskinfabriken WACO from Sweden. The senior operator from the shop where I purchased this machine said that the fence was original right from the initial purchase. I'm wondering if Valois & Valois had some sort of business relationship with WACO for supply of fences and possibly other components?
The machine probably weighs close to 1000 lbs. It has a 1.25" diameter spindle and a 5 hp 3-phase, 220/440v electric motor. The spindle is driven by a flat belt and two idler wheels to keep the belt tensioned.
From the Canadian Census records, the company can be found listed starting in 1932 and carrying on until 1951 as a company in the Machinery Industry category and were located at 639 Notre Dame St. West, Montreal, Canada. This category means that they produced a line of commercially sold equipment. They pop up again in the Machine Shop category in 1957-58 which is a downgrade into a category meaning a shop that just does one-off custom work.
