Offered for sale on eBay in April 2003. (Wish I had room for it.)

This example reportedly turns work up to 70" between centers and 90" in diameter on a machine which is fairly compact and relatively lightweight: approximately 5' wide, 14' long and 5' high... and should weigh about 5000 lbs, with assorted tools and face plates.

Not big enough? The English website www.lathes.co.uk says that "if even larger diameters needed to be turned, a faceplate could be fitted to the left-hand end of the spindle and a pit dug in the floor to accommodate the work". See
www.lathes.co.uk/fayscott/index.html for more splendid Fay & Scott info. There is also an illustration of a similar 2-1/2 ton Oliver No. 21 Combination Pattern Lathe at www.lathes.co.uk/oliveruk/page2.html

The website of Preferred Pattern and Model Company, Stratford, CT - www.preferredpattern.com - will give some idea of how these lathes originally earned their keep.

Many thanks to OWWM viewers who directed me to more pictures and info.
