Ekstrom Carlson 123 Scroll Sander

Aloha,
Here is my new example of the rare and much sought after EC 123 sander. I have been stalking the ones on the internet for a couple of years. I saw this one in a photo on a machinery dealers list for $2900; way out of my budget, and it stayed there for a long time. Whenever I tried to goggle one of these up it was always there. I found one on another dealers list for $1200 but it didnt have a photo. Imagine my surprise when I e-mailed for a photo and it was the same machine. I was leery and told the dealer that I saw it on anothers list. He informed me that he and the other dealer were 50/50 partners in this machine and the other dealer had physical possession of the machine. So the $2900 and the $1200 was for the same machine but 2 different dealers.
Some time in this process I started talking to Tim Shelton a fellow OWWMer who has done a stunning restoration on one of these on the mothership. If you havent already seen it, you can see that beautiful example here;

Tim encouraged me to buy this machine. So I offered much less than the $1200 asking price and was surprised when the dealer accepted. He was also very co-operative in crating and the deal was made. About a week later I got an e-mail from another OWWMer telling me that he had his eye on this one for quite a while. He finally decided to buy it and called on it, but the dealer informed him some guy in Hawaii just bought it. Sorry bout that.
I like this very cool machine a lot. I didn't do much to it, but it had a manual starter and I upgraded that to a Square D mag switch. The paint is not bad so that is a low priority in my life right now. The serial number tag is mia and there is no number on the table, so unfortunately I don't know the birthday of this machine. While I was ordering belts I made a mobile base for it as it will be an occasional use machine in my shop. It was already wired for 480 volts and runs very, very smooth, almost silent. Lady luck smiled on me once again. I really liked how this machine came online in my shop. The sanding belts and the missing drive belt arrived the same day. As soon as we put a belt on it we had a woodworking furniture project detail waiting for it, and immediately put it into service. Ya gotta like that! Theres not much that would slow this one down, she runs very strong.
And a big mahalo to Tim Shelton for his advice. Is life good or what?
Aloha,
Chuck
