Found at a machine shop’s “outside [cold] storage”, been there for about 40 years. They were both 100% rusty and had broken parts but, thanks to “The Iron Hand”, very repairable. Good thing about outside storage in Alaska’s interior is, or used to be, 3/4 of those 40 years were well below zero. Not much deep rust that way. All new cast parts are available. They were missing the angle support assemblies. I bought new parts for both vises. I managed to get one disassembled but finding the tricky little 1/4-20 set screw that holds everything together was a puzzle. I have “sand” blasted half the parts and I’m soaking the other half in vinegar. Blasting is much faster and more effective. I know about Evapo Rust, $34.++ /gallon here. Haven’t tried it, yet. So, three days on and vinegar is about 1/2 way there. I’ll probably blast the rest. I’m looking forward to mounting one vise opposite my vintage Record from UK, when they we’re still made there. It’s a substantial vise at 9” but half the size of the Emmert 85 pounds.
Some of you probably know, these vises rotate 360 and angle from 0-90. One jaw set is for wood, rotate 180 and there is a small jaw set for metal. Also, there are two dogs in each jaw. One set of 4 standard dogs. On the iron side, four “pin” jaws for round or oval patterns. Also available is an auxiliary mini-jaw for tapered pieces. Although, the main jaws will angle to accept tapers as well. Haven’t used one yet but the foregoing is my understanding.
