L D Howard's patented rolling table saw that was acquired from the shop of the New Bedford MA Department of Public Works, where it had been for many years.
Worth noting is the miter gauge and slot to the left of the saw blade. This gauge could be used on the rolling table, or in this case, used as a rip fence on the left or right side. The earliest Howard saws did not have a slot on the stationary table. This example has a slot, but it was milled into the table as an afterthought, judging from the way it was done. It would appear that Howard's saw design started out as a tilting arbor cut-off saw, or a miter saw, as he called it, and only later began to be used and marketed as a combination rip and crosscut, the conventional form of table saw that we know today.
This example was at one time converted to a non-tilting v-belt drive, but has now been returned to Howard's original tilting design, albeit with a single v-belt instead of the original flat belt. The original countershaft and idler are still there. Missing is the original flat belt pulley on the arbor, and the 12" wide flat belt pulley that was originally on the counter shaft. The original angling fences are shown on the rolling table, one with its original flip stop.
The machine has its original green paint with black, red, and yellow decorative details.
