It was in pretty rough shape but I bought a sandblaster and went at it. Ended up coming out OK. Amazingly I had the whole fenc system in good shape and it cleaned up really nice. The original babbit bearings were in great shape and when I put a motor on it you could hear only a slight hum. They just don't make things like they used to.
