Comments:
I've heard large jointers referred to as "Aircraft Carriers" many times. This one can truely carry that badge and has the inventory tag to prove it. It also has a Navy logo, the letters "US" on either side of an anchor stamped in the corners of both tables and on the chicken tag. It is dated as April of 1943. It was built for the War Dept at the hight of the war effort. It is the oldest of the 6 Oliver machines that came as a package from a machinery dealer that purchased them from the EARLE Naval Weapons Station, not far from Sandy Hook, NJ. I had intended to sell this one from the start as I've already got one. I'm keeping the other machines which included a 199D ITCH planer listed here. It has a 5 HP continuous duty General Electric single voltage 220V motor. The bearings sound good It is under power in my shop in north Jersey. It came with the grinding rail, older style, about 3" wide, but the grinder got lost along the way. I thought it curious that the rail was never indexed to the table, or any other machine, with the tapered pins and the outfeed table has no grinding position mark. I assume the grinder was never used because the hole to locate the knives at TDC was full of paint and grime as well. There doesn't appear to be any broken or repaired parts except for the rabbeting ledge which appears to have been replaced at some point. Thare are several coats of paint on the machine, typical maintenance shop work. Color? Battleship gray of course. I am listing it for sale in the classifieds on this site.
