The story:
Acquired in Galax Va in an IRS auction on March 19 2003
( the day the Iraq war started)
and No one paid attention to the auction that afternoon
I was hunting for an Oakly H5 or 6 and these were cheaper
( I was happy when I saw the weight of an H5/H6 that there )
so I got this one ,as part of a 4 machine package for $900USD
Did two day trip to bring them back , 18 hrs /way
I was the first to arrive to pick up any machinery so I was
given a tour of the Galax facility before all the rest of the machinery was pulled
out , it was huge with one or two of everything
I loaded up with the help of a few tag along employee ( it cost me $30 Mcd lunch
for for 2700 lbs ), and got to talk
to the person who worked on these two machines , and got the ins and outs
The Machines :
Both are wysong 315's , one from 1938 and the other 1939
the only difference they had changed paint from a colour similar to 1970's Oliver
dark green in 38 to a speckled teal blue and white in 39.
the 39 was the worst colour of teal you could imagine
name plates differ also , but thats it they are both the same
which made restoration easier
Both are 7 1/2 Hp 208 3/60 with Allan Bradley 609 Manual starter
2 Cast steel 32"by 5" long platens and 34" by 6" long tables that can raise/lower 4"
as well as tilt .
has big 20" by 8" end table that tilts as well as raise/lower.
Both machines have been rebuilt and repainted to match the others here
One machine is complete with both plattens and tables on both sides
the other machine is single sided , both have complete end tables
weight about 875 lbs each c/w massive motors which are around 200lbs
Machine is unique in that it can be made longer by extending the end table
support , so you can customize the length between the 108" and 132" standard
belt lengths( tried it and blew an end pully , so I'm looking ? )
Don Hedge said they were bought new by Galax Furniture .
He said the motors had been switched out sometime after the 39 date
Central Machinery ( the good one ) still sells this machine today but 3 Hp max
new retail today $4400 USD
I use one for wood and the other for anything else .
