I really didn't "need" a jointer, but they make life so much easier. I had just about gave up and this actually popped up on CL when I was I looking. I thought 250 was a bit high, but I quickly did some interweb research and called the gentleman. He was a little mad as he was bombarded with calls and all anyone did was try and beat him down on the phone and not show up. I just asked to look at it, and I had cash. I went to the PO home and out to the shop where it was, other than the bed and fence just having some surface rust, it was as in these pictures at my home. He had a piece of one by scrap in a bucket and I pulled it out and asked politely, " May I check it out?" He went from mad to very nice and said "Sure let me plug it in!"; it ran strong and buzzed off a spray of chips out the bottom. The one by looked good. I shut it off and offered him two bills cash. He accepted and we loaded it.
I wasn't looking to make him any madder since he was just beat up, but since I was nice he mellowed a bit and we were able to do business. Besides, I showed up.
I did the quick and dirty interweb and this unit is considered the "long bed" 6" Delta unit. Most other 6" were almost a foot shorter. I felt I got a good deal with the long bed, and all the other 6" and 8" units were over $300 and higher and were all in serious need of restoration or parts. OK, I don't the PO took off or removed the belt guard and the blade guard, as every other tool in his shop had all the safety bits and pieces on them. He said he was hardly using it and had picked up an older 8" Powermatic in excellent shape for a song. I saw it along the wall. It was a nice old 230v unit!
For what I am doing this 6" Delta will do the job nicely! I'll pick up the factory blade and belt guards to complete the unit!
Once I did get it home the fence would not adjust in any possible way. I put it off a few days and printed out all of the sheets from the site here and did some surfing. I reattacked the issue a few days later, soaked the bed, soaked the slide/tilt mechanism with a can of WD-40. After a while, it broke free and I removed it and I gently slid the head assy into a can,and filled it with kerosene to further soak. There was 40+ years of grease, goo, and sawdust packed into it. I got it clean and operational, gently scrubbed the bed an fence faces waxed them and re-assembled.. I now had full left and right slide as well as 45 degrees tilt in and 60degrees tilt out. Blades could be sharpened......and depending on wood type and how you are feeding the stock snipe is possible.
