This was another E-Bay purchase. $1700 with shipping from Texas.
The Master 2 SP is at the top of the heap of spindle sanders. Sure the Oliver 381 is big and heavy and durable, like a 67 Cadillac. If that is an accurate comparison then the Master is a 68 Corvette. The coolest feature is the lighted periscope with a hairline pointer to show the angle of the tilting arbor. Superior dust collection to any machine except the State T-5. It has a router type collet and a safety mechanism that will not allow high speed operation with the large spindles in place. The best feature is the lack of rubber spindles, the 1/4" - 2" spindles are precision ground steel with a slightly enlarged knurled base that secures the sleeves on the spindle. A simple tug is all that is needed to change the sleeve, in seconds not minutes with no tools. The 3" and 4" spindles are a sort of staved aluminum construction that expand when a hand nut is tightened. I suspect an added benifit over rubber, in addition to speed of sleeve changes and accuracy, is the sleeve will run cooler since it is in contact with steel or aluminum which will transfer heat much better than rubber.
The inventory tag reads, University of Texas at Austin. The top is rusty but should clean up nicely. It came with all the throat plates and one more spindle than was shown in the listing. The spindles were very rusty, they cleaned up OK but some pitting remains. It was in the weather and consequently the spindle bearings will need to be replaced. This unit will replace an older 2SP I have in my shop that is complete with all spindles and throat plates, it lacks the high speed operation for the small spindles which is why I'm replacing it.
