This is one of those things if you want badly enough you’ll make it happen. Beginning in October 2019 and ending in November 2020 with the help of numerous people throughout the US this unit finally came together.
The Jointer itself, a 1958, 37-220 Deluxe 6" was purchased from an OWWM’r in NorCal. Since it'd be an 800 mile round trip I chose to have it stored and delivered when someone had a chance to trek down to SoCal. The guy I purchased it from said he simply didn’t have room for it. It was originally owned by a fellow Italian woodworker who made the wood stand for it as well. Although it was built really well my plans were ultimately set on a CI base. The machine was picked up by another NorCal member and stored. Then a third member, from SoCal agreed to drive it down and meetup to finish it's final leg home, So 3 parties, 6 months later I finally took possession in April 2020. It came with the blade guard and Vintage Wagner 1/3hp that ran well, but a bit underpowered for my taste along with some vibration that made matters not so pleasant.
While waiting for the jointer I purchased the NOS 667 CI base from another member in VA in December 2019. The only thing missing was the belt cover. I knew I’d be taking a chance on how to get it delivered, but for the price couldn’t pass it up. After asking around with no luck another member wrote to me and said he could pick it up, store it and deliver it when he visits family here in SoCal, November 2020. Wow! What luck and how nice. When I finally received the base I was amazed at it’s condition, it only needed a simple cleanup and it was ready to go.
While waiting on the base and machine I found a belt cover from a member in January ’20. I think he was in the the midwest. It was in great shape, but seemed odd for me to have only one piece of a machine that I didn’t have yet. “Patience young grasshopper.”
Knowing the motor was just 1/3hp which may have been fine I still kept my eyes open locally. In April of 2020 I came across a CL ad for a Delta 3/4hp RI motor. Maybe a tad more HP than I’d intended, but for the price I couldn’t let it go. After a 4 hour round trip south I returned with a great motor along and several pulleys he threw in including one marked 5700, just the one I needed for this build. I did a thorough cleaning and inspection, replaced the brushes, bearings and cord, but left the paint as-is. It runs clean and strong.
I had a Delta 132 switch, but a Unisaw plate. I rarely purchase reproductions and find the cost a bit extreme, almost gouging. On a WW forum I saw someone had a red Rockwell plate on their Uni, so I contacted him and we agreed on an even swap. Win-win, for both of us.
After receiving all the pieces, ordered new blades and some minor restoring I finally pieced it together. I didn’t repaint since it was a close enough match for now, not perfect, but I was fine with that. With the help of the OWWM forum it tuned up really nice. I will go through a more detailed restoration when time allows. It’s a use-as-needed machine, but runs smooth, accurate and is a great addition to my Delta shop. I’ve used it numerous times and very happy with the end product. Although it took over a year to search and acquire all the necessary parts I’d do it all again if I had to. Not sure if all involved parties would though, haha. Either way I’m extremely thankful they did.
