I acquired this well used and abused Wellsaw Model 49A from a listing on Craigslist. This saw was manufactured in 1957. This restoration required a significant amount of cleaning, degreasing, machining work and painting. The saw had a crown on the idler and drive wheels (no back flange ring as on modern saws). The crown on the idler wheel had been destroyed by the blade being "thrown off" the saw over the years. I machined the radius of the idler wheel and created a square edge. A flange ring was machined and installed on the idler wheel. The crown on the drive wheel was not changed, it was in good shape. After tracking adjustments were made the saw blade now tracks as it should (with a crown on the drive wheel and a flange ring on the idler wheel). The tension spring was replaced with a pneumatic cylinder that was converted to hydraulic. A Chip Tray frame was machined and added. The "chip tray" is a Wal-Mart 1/2 cooking sheet. Numerous other parts were machined to return the saw to operation. The saw is used weekly in my shop.
