My recent project has been a Boice-Crane 15" floor standing model drill press. According to what information I have been able to glean from this web site, it is possibly a Model 2818 that was manufactured and sold about 1967. I acquired the drill press from the state of NC through a surplus property bid about 3 years ago. The drill press was used for many years in a prison in the western part of NC and that is where I picked it up at. The original 230 volt motor was bad and required replacement. I chose to install a 115 volt 3/4 hp motor with a 5/8" shaft. The drill press utilized the BC PolyFlex V-Belt and did not have a drive belt on it when I got it. I have not been able to locate one of the PolyFlex belts (about 38 to 40 inches long) so I converted the drive to a 4 step pulley utilizing an A-40 drive belt. No repainting has been done to the drill press but it did require some elbow grease for cleaning it up. The on/off switch had been replaced with a wall type toggle switch at some point in time. When I replaced the motor, I also installed all new wiring. The drill press now operates very smoothly. If I could locate a source for the PolyFlex type belts, I would be tempted to reinstall the BC pulleys in order to take advantage of the increased number of drill speeds that can attained by using them.
