Fortunately, I ran across this sander posted on the web back in July of 2017 while it was still available and was able to obtain it. As my main interest lies in early (pre-1945ish) tools made by Delta, I found it ironic that I bought it from an automotive restoration shop located in Delta, PA. The owner had purchased the sander from a government auction 6 years prior. Unfortunately, one of his workers had knocked it over into forklift (it did not fall completely over) which damaged the base which he “repaired” by fabricating a large steel plate which he through bolting to the table. The original GE motor had failed at some point during its life and modifications were made to the sander to adapt a replacement motor:
1. The top of the cast iron riser column which had been curved to directly accept the body of a GE motor was machined down flat
2. A larger steel plate was fabricated and bolted to the top of the riser column
3. A huge Allis-Chalmers 1 HP 3 phase motor was mounted to the steel plate
4. A steel ring was fabricated and bolted the front of the motor end bell to adapt the dust shroud to the motor
5. The original finned cast iron disc was replaced by a simple machined steel disc
Another modification made by someone else was to fit a thin piece of steel over the original tilt table and pin it to a miter bar that was fitted in the slot.
My plan is to restore this sander and post about its restoration on the OWWM.org website.
