This is not my Lathe.
I spotted this locally and knew the manufacturer and tool were not represented in the Photo Index. I'm not sure if the number on the manufacturers plate (DI 10585) is the S/N or model No. so I did not list it as either. This was described as follows:

Vintage 1942 (US Patent 2281307) tool made by the Johnson Engineering Co., Ferguson, MO. Unique design clamps into a vise and grabs onto the motor or generator shaft using split tapered bushings. I think the tool was tapped onto the shaft with a soft mallet. The cylindrical center has what looks like a turned finish, which is ingeniously used to provide longitudinal feed when the housing casting is tightened with a wingnut. The housing is internally "threaded" around the cylindrical center, which acts as a leadscrew and feeds the adjustable cutter across the commutator surface when the big handle is turned. A hinged sliding sawblade undercuts the mica to avoid shorting the windings with metal burrs or chips. After the armature is reconditioned, it's ejected from the split bushings by turning the T handle, which pushes it out. Nothing is to be seized. Constructed of cast pot metal or zinc with steel parts.
