Facebook marketplace porch pick up for $20. Quick test proved it ran and bearings were OK. Disassembled, wire brushed, primed and painted. Next test, I ran for a minute or more and noticed the speed was slow, 2500 rpm vs 3450 on the nameplate. The motor was also running too hot. More studying and testing proved this model 287 is not like some other model 287's. There was no centrifugal start switch. Next, I disconnected the existing capacitor (270-324uf @ 125v) after start-up, the motor rpm and temperature was then normal. Did more studying, guessed a value and ordered a run capacitor, 30uf 370v. Replacing the capacitor solved the issues. It runs cool and the correct speed. The next problem was self inflicted, I ordered 1" wide grinding wheels and they were too wide. Try not to laugh too hard, but I used scraps of Lauan (thin plywood), to make spacers for each side cover. The 1" grinding wheels clear and work fine. Very heavy compared to other bench grinders.
