Comments:
The lathe was manufactured by Daniel Chamberlain of Boston. City of Boston business records indicate that Chamberlain operated a company as a machinist from 1848 to 1872 in a couple different locations in Boston giving a fairly accurate time frame for it's date of manufacture and potentially bringing that date of origin into the 1840's. It has features of early lathes such as wooden drums in the headstock, a granite counter weight for the carriage, and a rather interesting two jaw chuck which may have been designed for some specific manufacturing process. We have located a lathe by Daniel Chamberlain in the Henry Ford Museum which has been dated from 1865. This lathe appears to be of earlier origin and almost certainly predates the Henry Ford object.
