I bought this lathe from a local farmer. His grandfather had started the farm, which is now recognized as a centennial farm, and though he was farming the land his passion was more in the machine repair side of rural farm life. He set up a shop on his property and gradually spent more time with that than actual farming which his son took over. He had the first welding outfit in the region and all the locals hired him for repairs to keep their farm productive. The shop still stands and was an impressive operation in its day with two lathes and two drill presses run off an overhead line shaft, a blacksmith forge, grinders, and even in floor heating in the concrete floor!

It was like walking into a time capsule when I went to pick up the lathe. It seemed a shame for this lathe to be leaving the shop but the grandson (current farmer) and the great-grandson are reviving the shop. The great grandson at 15 yrs. old is keen on learning the trade and so the proceeds from selling this lathe to me are going to be invested in reviving the shop so he can learn how to run a lathe, drill press, etc. I have shared with him the South Bend publication "How to Operate a Lathe" and have a return trip planned.

This particular lathe is fairly complete (I think). the electric motor was added to the lathe at some point, you can see the rudimentary but effective belt tensioning set up. The handle for engaging the cutting head has broken and I need to see a picture of one so I can have it recreated. Everything is covered with dried grease but the ways seem to be in ok condition but i have not had any time to properly clean and assess what i have. Everything turns and moves basically, so I have a good start. I assume there are serial numbers to be discovered but will have to wait until I can get it cleaned up. I am really eager to hear from anyone that may be able to tell me more about this lathe so that i know how to proceed with its restoration. Interestingly there are no cast company markings in the legs; I have seen a picture of a lathe that did have some wording but the pics were not good enough to determine what it was. Hope to hear from someone on my find.
