I found this saw on Craiglist under Heavy Equipment in Naples, Florida. There isn't much vintage equipment around here since its a recently developed area so I was surprised to see a piece of Ol' Arn up for sale. It had been listed for over a month when I noticed it and I think it might have been gone sooner if it was listed in the Tools section.

The saw was in a unit in an industrial park that was owned by a woodworker who passed away. The unit had been bought by a general contractor for slightly above market rate but contained lots of high end woodworking tools and several hundred board feet of Honduran mahogany. The contractor was selling off some of the tools in the unit and keeping others. This one was being sold in favor of a modern SCMI slider.

By the time I found the saw, the quadrant gauge and blade guard had been sold off it for $500. I paid $1500 for the saw, an outfeed table, a miter gauge and an extra 18" rip blade. I'm still really happy with the deal I got but a little gutted that the quadrant and blade guard were separated from the saw, especially so cheaply. I have a feeling that whoever scored those accessories lurks in these here waters.

The previous owner of the saw (before the contractor) was James Sturgeon. He was a CPA and attorney who was an excellent woodworker. He built a piece he called a "Persian Chippendale" which was in the Fine Woodworking reader's gallery and featured pierced carved legs and other exquisite ornamentation. He lived most of his life in Charleston, West Virginia and probably brought the saw down with him from up north. I figured out who he was by the name on the box that the extra saw blade came in.

There is a tag below the serial number that indicates the saw was once owned by the US Navy. I'm not sure what the numbers on that tag refer to. There is a smaller tag below that which is hard to decipher but might read "BLISS-CANTON"(?) with a number underneath. I will take a closer look next time I see the visit the saw in its temporary storage location.

Thanks for everyone here for sharing their expertise. I spent a lot of time researching the saw (mainly on this site) before I bought it and learned a ton in the process. I look forward to cleaning the saw up and incorporating it into my shop!
