Comments:
This machine is an amalgamation of two Unisaws of similar vintage. The majority of the components came from an abandoned machine salvaged from the Forest Haven Asylum near Ft. Meade in Maryland. This facility was shuttered in 1991 due to patient abuses and shifting priorities; much of its contents were left to deteriorate and this saw was among the detritus. The second donor machine was purchased off Craigslist in Connecticut. This machine was in rough shape and only components, like the Biesemeyer fence, were usable. From a label on the cabinet I know that it spent at least some of its life in Maynard, Massachusetts at a company called Atkins & Merrill which manufactured material handling equipment and is now defunct. Using these two saws, and the help of fellow member Josh Pauling, I was able to assemble Penney. She is meant to be a user saw, so modifications were made to allow for safety, ease of dust collection, and storage.

Comments: Front view of Penney. The fence rails were in particularly bad shape and more could be done to remove the surface rust if I cared.

Comments: I fabricated the hinged steel sheet metal motor cover door. I tacked five 0.125" round rods vertically to give the impression of the design on the cast iron stands used by Rockwell for their other equipment.

Comments: I also fabricated this steel door to enhance the retro look of the saw and store wrenches and small spare parts. The theme was also inspired by the cast iron Rockwell machinery bases

Comments: Sloped panel and dust port installed for ease of use. The back of the access door was modified and foam gasketing installed to prevent dust bypassing the sloped panel and falling to the floor under the saw.
