Comments:
I duked it out with Bill Simmeth in the last few seconds of a fleaBay contest to win this saw swage. It was advertized as a Fay & Egan, and indeed J.A. Fay & Egan appears on it, but I was unable to locate it in any of the company's catalogs. The patent date is also on the piece, and tracked to patent 642,896, issued to David J. Crowell of Dubois, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania on 6 February, 1900. Our more knowledgeable members can enlighten me further, but it is my understanding that a saw swage and saw set accomplish similar tasks - both determine the bend of the saw tooth, which determines the kerf. (I use a Disston saw set on one of my tail-less hand saws to create a bigger kerf for some operations.) The difference is in the way they handle bending the teeth. I'll leave the adventures of tracking down patents for pre-1976 inventions to another time.
