This is installed on a steam-driven air compressor/blower, installed as part of a very complete municipal water supply rapid sand filtration system. The blower provided air to be injected with the forced water, up through a sand filter to lift the impurities from the layers, as part of the backwash and cleaning system. The complete plant was constructed in 1906, using technology supplied by the New York Continental Jewell Filtration Company.
