I recently acquired this vise second hand from someone who purchased it from an estate in Ohio. Further provenance is unknown. My research has not produced any information about this number 30 rapid-acting tail vise. The number 30 listed in the Vintage Machinery archives, and by searching for the Charles Strelinger catalog or by following this link: https://archive.org/details/CharlesAStrelingerWoodWorkersTools1897/page/n191/mode/2up (see pages 786-787)
These sources describe the number 30 as a high swivel vise. The number 35 is a rapid acting tail vise, however it is unlike this number 30. The distinguishing feature of this number 30 is that it is to be mounted vertically on the front right corner of the bench. I conclude this based on the orientation of the words on the front of the vise, as well as the orientation/location of the brass bench dog. It is located on the narrow 4-inch in edge of the vise aligned over the guide bars. In this position it would be located 3-1/2 from the front edge of the workbench. This would be an ideal location to line up with holes in the workbench set back from the front edge. The catalog description states that custom vises were available: "Custom vises can be furnish in any width from 3 to 36 inches." Perhaps this is a custom produced vise. The catalog is however out of date as the catalog is dated 1896 while the vise has both patents: 1894 as well as 1898. It is possible that the design was changed in this time.
