Another one of these sanders sold by a Southern CA machinery dealer some years back. This one presents several mysteries to the person tying to establish chronologies for Apex sanders.
The badge is like the badge featured on several early model D or DR sanders logged here, but it features a much higher serial number, and the later ~rectangular base casting with the space age script. I called the dealer and was able to confirm the serial number which they had in their files. Also this older style badge, which spells Disk-with-a-k, still (appears to) identify the manufacturer as Rankin Bros. Precision Machine & Tool Works, an entity which was superseded in 1954 by Rankin Bros. Manufacturing Inc.
There seem to be several possible explanations for this.
(1) left over badges for the D models were used by the successor company until they ran out
(2) left over disc shroud castings with the block script were used until they ran out
- both of which presume that the serial numbers issued to the D (DR) models are sequential and overlapping with the serial numbers issued to the S models
