I do not own this machine. I found photos of it online from a completed auction in Southern California. Very few early examples of these disc sanders are represented here so I am adding it. We know rather little about the years prior to 1954 when Rankin Brothers Manufacturing Inc., was established. The D (or DR) models which feature gear-driven adjustments for both elevation and tilt of the table are much rarer than the S model. The badging on these models was, it seems, carried over into the era with the ~rectangular bases, suggesting perhaps that on these models the casting surrounding the lower half of the disc was (a) slightly different due to how the other part were attached, and (b) an early run of these castings was still being drawn from after the change in the design of the base and in use of the space age script found on the later S models. See other entry here for examples of this.
The round base corresponds to the Rankin Brothers Precision Machine & Tool Works incarnation of the company which we believe to have extended from perhaps 1948-1954.

Noteworthy is the round base, and the block script on the lower guard
