I spotted this in a CL ad and picked it up in New Haven, CT. 1-1/2 hour drive each way, 220 mile round trip, but worth it for such a rare machine. I believe this is the first Gilbert machine listed on the VM site.
The cord appears to be original. Amazing. But I won't be plugging it in.
The catalog page doesn't specify the horsepower of the motor, and there is nothing on the motor itself. The table top is 8" square (catalog page mentions 6-1/2" square), and the sanding disc is 8" in diameter.
The original finished was blue and black; this one is very faded, almost looks green; I'll have to dig around on the underside to see if I can find an unaltered color hidden somewhere. I will probably restore this machine when I get a chance.
All in all, this machine appears complete with no missing or broken parts. It even sits on a wooden base, just like the one on the catalog page. Original?
This machine weighs in at only 17 pounds.
The last image I've included is a page from a catalog identified as 1936; I also found the same page labeled 1938, so I'm not sure of the date of manufacture.
If anyone has any photographs or color catalogs or anything about these machines, please contact me.
I also bought an early (1931) Walker-Turner "Driver" jig saw, model 9B5351, from the same seller. It's similar to the model No. 5 Jig Saw pictured below the No. 10 on the catalog page, but without the motor attached.
The seller gave me a Craftsman 3-wheel band saw, model 103.24300, a bit rusty and beat up, but ok for a parts machine.
The seller could not provide any good history on this machine, just that he picks up machines from his neighbors and yard sales.
