Yard sale find many years ago. Clamps the miter firmly while allowing access to drive a nail. Swivels and tilts to present the workpiece at a comfortable working angle.
These were originally invented and made by H. C. Marsh of Rockford, IL (http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=22188). When Stanley bought Marsh around 1926, they took over the same design, which they made unchanged into the late 1980’s or even early 90s. The earlier ones (pre-1935 ?) were branded as Stanley – Marsh, so mine is newer than that, but otherwise hard to date.
