The Ashton Valve Company was created as a result of Henry Ashton inventing the "pop safety valve" in 1871. Boiler explosions were a common hazard and many died because of the lack of a dependable safety valve. Another factor that made the vale so popular was that after it "popped", releasing excess steam, it would shut down again in a few seconds which prevented the loss of too much steam.
