These scans are from the 1891 catalogue for James Smart Manufacturing Co in Brockville, Ontario. The catalogue is owned by my friend Bob Dent. Living in the Brockville area all my life, I have probably seen 6 or 8 of the No 2 size mortiser. I have never seen a No 1. I use a #2 mortiser all the time in making traditional window sash. The one I use (I have a spare out back) has a blacksmith's repair on the foot pedal and a shim to increase the tension on the wooden spring, but still works perfectly. They appear to be identical to the Ezra Gould mortisers made in New Jersey, only the name has been changed. By searching the photo index, it appears the same machione was also made by McGregor-Gourlay, Canfield & Co., and H W Petrie.
