Comments:
I purchased this Crescent/Rockwell mortiser in the summer of 2002 from a machinery dealer in Chicago that Pat O. had recommended. It is missing the front clamp assemmbly, and does not have the more desireable rack-and-pinion traversing table, but was immediately ready to put into service. It could probably use some new paint and other cosmetic touching-up, but mechanically it is in great shape.
Mr. Keeting at J. E. S. was able to provide a solid date of manufacture, and even the identity of the original purchaser: it was sold to the U. S. Navy at Great Lakes Naval Station on 10 June 1949.
Outfitted with a Greenlee chisel and bit set, this beastie will make 3/4-inch square mortises in almost anything without breaking a sweat.
