I purchased this jointer for $350 from a cabinetmaker in Myrtle Beach who was retiring. He told me his dad bought it new and used if for a decade, but eventually it ended up in a barn. Years later, the gentleman rescued it when he was starting his business.
The machine was in dire need of a tuneup, but since kids #3 & #4 came along over the last couple of years, shop time is a luxury, and figured I'd just made due.
A couple weeks ago I couldn't sleep one night and ended up out in the shop tearing this thing down. All parts were cleaned, paint was stripped, and the cast pieces got a couple coats of Rustoleum Hammered Gray. Additionally, I rewired everything and added a new switch.
The tables on this puppy were really nasty, heavily pitted, and I was determined to clean them up. I ended up using the same process you'd use to clean up the sole of a hand plane: I glued sand paper to a big hunk of granite and worked my way up to finer grits. The tables are really heavy so this was a hell of a workout. I didn't think I was going to get them to a mirror shine, but I'm happy with the result.
Unfortunately, I haven't learned my lesson and accidentally faded the paint on the Delta nameplate, so I think I'll pop all those off and repaint them.
