I had a question from a Vintage Machinery member about the Powr Panl switch on my 8” saw ( http://vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/detail.aspx?id=15367 ). He was asking for specifics on how I converted it from two prong plugs to a grounded 3 prong plug setup. It’s easier to explain with pictures, so I figured I would just post the answer here.

On the back side of the Powr Panl, I mounted a 4 inch extension ring (like a 4 inch metal electrical box, but open on both ends). A grounded power cord comes into the box; the hot and neutral are soldered to the input power blades of the Powr Panl, while the ground wire goes to the ground terminal of the grounded duplex receptacle. A two prong plug is plugged in to the Powr Panl motor receptacle, with the two wires attached to the hot and neutral screws of the new grounded receptacle.

Important points:
• Use a multimeter or continuity checker to ensure that the hot side of the grounded power cord is feeding the hot side of the receptacle, and neutral side of power cord plug goes to neutral side of receptacle.
• Insulate all exposed connections before closing up the box.
• I decided to route both wires (neutral and hot) through the Powr Panl switch because from checking with my continuity tester, it is a double pole switch (opens both neutral and hot in the off position). But it would certainly work to have the power cord neutral connect directly to the new receptacle, and only route the hot wire through the switch. Just be even more sure that you have maintained the correct polarity from power cord to receptacle if you go that route, you do *not* want to be switching only the neutral side.

Comments: Not yet insulated, showing cord soldered to power inputs and plug connecting to receptacle. Ground wire from input cord goes directly to ground lug on receptacle.
