Comments:
My father purchased this about 1949. He turned a couple of bowls and some table legs, then mostly used it as a drum and disk sander for as long as I can remember. I have the original instruction sheet dated Jan 1947. The headstock spindle is a 5/8" plain shaft and uses standard Shopsmith faceplates and drive centers. The tailstock is a dead center, and I use beeswax in it to reduce buring from the friction. I've had this lathe since 1992. I built a stand and used a salvaged dishwasher motor for power. The original headstock bearings were worn and the spindle was scratched from loose setscrews in the headstock pulley, so I had a local machinist replace the sleeve bearings and make a new headstock spindle. I've used it to turn pens and smaller (6") natural-edge bowls.
The photo has the original wrench for the banjo, tailstock and tool rest adjustments. In actual use, I replace the original square-head setscrew shown on the tool rest height adjustment with a 3-prong knob that's faster to use.
