Comments:
The screwed handle in the headstock pushes against the center putting pressure on the work arbor between the centers. The bolt in the dog driver on the work end of the spindle bears on a pin that presses on the headstock center, locking it in place. Loosen the dog driver before moving the headstock's center. The underside of the bed is keyed to the table of an Atlas shaper. In the bed are two holes for socket screws to attach the index head to the shaper's table. The bed is wider than the table of a South Bend shaper so an auxiliary table must be used on those shapers. To the best of my knowledge there were only two index plates supplied with the device, one with 30 & 36 holes and the other with 28 and 48 holes. The centers are hardened but I don't know if this is case hardening or through hardening. The extra T bolts sticking up from the bed are for a shop built attachment not shown in the photos below and are not normally present.
