A fellow craftsman on Maui purchased 2 of these from a dealer in California. They were pretty much identical except that one was badged Davis and Wells and the other Oliver Machinery Co. He fell on hard times and I purchased the one with the Oliver badge. These were in fact made by Davis and Wells, notice it says sold by on the badge, and according to Rich Fink, Oliver Machinery Co. was at that time trying to find a way to stay competitive in a changing market. Jeff McVey told me that this line of Davis and Wells machines had serial numbers starting at 250,000.
Dont let the little size fool you. This one has a 5 HP motor about the size of a 5 gallon bucket on a light frame machine. I believe she turns at 9000 RPMs and it sounds like it is going to take off. It is loud; the airport sometimes calls us to ask if we can hold it down because they can't hear the 747s. Hearing protection is a must. We use this shaper for our cope process in cabinet doors. It stays set up for copes all the time and it is pretty well suited for that process because of the small table size. This one had the original fence and wrenches with it. It has a 1 1/8" spindle. All I did to it was add a dust hookup and mobile base. I dont like the height adjustment and I would like to replace this with a heavier shaper while I can still see the dog bark.
Anything with an Oliver badge can't be all bad. We have made a lot of doors with this one.
